How SismoTune works

Precision mechanics for automated piano tuning.

SismoTune is an automated piano-tuning system in development. It combines optical scanning, movement along precision rails and a motorised tuning head designed to position a tuning key directly onto the piano’s tuning pins.

The aim is to bring these operations together in a controlled, repeatable process, guided by dedicated software.

The process

From scanning to precise positioning

Mapping the tuning pins

A scanning system identifies the position of the piano’s tuning pins and establishes a map for the machine to follow.

Reference layouts for known piano models are intended to assist this process. The scan provides positioning information for the instrument being worked on.

Moving across three axes

SismoTune uses three axes of movement:

  • Xmoves the carriage along the horizontal rails.
  • Ypositions the head across the tuning-pin area.
  • Zlowers and raises the tuning key.

Together, these movements allow the software to guide the head towards a selected tuning pin and align the key before engagement.

Engaging the tuning pin

The compact motorised head is positioned vertically above the selected pin. A tuning key descends directly onto it, along the same vertical axis.

Once engaged, the motor turns the key under software control. The head then withdraws so the carriage can move to the next position.

Following the tuning sequence

The control software coordinates positioning and motorised adjustments according to a defined tuning sequence.

The detailed measurement methods and control algorithms remain proprietary while development and testing continue.

Expertise

Mechanical engineering guided by piano expertise

Piano tuning requires more than locating and turning a pin. The machine must also account for alignment, access and the behaviour of the instrument during adjustment.

SismoTune is being developed through collaboration between piano-tuning expertise, mechanical engineering and software development. Prototype testing will assess positioning accuracy, tuning performance, compatibility and practical installation.

Development status

Currently under development.

The first prototype is targeted for completion by the end of 2026.

Performance, tuning time and supported piano models will be communicated as testing provides verified results.

Prototype target
Late 2026

A development milestone. Commercial availability has not yet been announced.
